We're an independent publisher and social enterprise who produce the UK's only story magazine - designed to support and develop reluctant readers. Improved literacy is a powerful tool to improve social mobility.
Each issue of Storytime has a variety of tales with different levels of reading difficulty, with fairy tales, poems, myths & legends, modern tales that relate to children's lives today, plus tales from a variety of cultures to help children gain an appreciation for the world around them.
It's a simple concept - giving children good quality and engaging literacy content - but in a format that's accessible to them. They might be intimated to pick up a book, but the magazine format is familiar and much less daunting.
What's also really important is that when a magazine comes through the door in a colourful envelope addressed to the child, there's a real sense of joy and ownership, and regular monthly deliveries also start to become habit forming. Something the magazine format allows us to do that books wouldn't necessarily achieve.
We started out selling Storytime directly to parents, but rapidly expanded into schools which helped us better reach the children who most need the support. Schools use us for class reading, and as a resource for Pupil Premium funded children. We work with about 30 Local Authorities, plus housing associations and charities who fund subscriptions on behalf of vulnerable children - most families who receive Storytime do not pay for it themselves.
The majority of money we make goes back into the business to allow us to continue to provide Storytime to schools, councils and other organisations at close to cost price. We now send out 20,000 copies of Storytime each month which actually puts us in the top 10 of children's subscription magazines in the UK.
